The Resurgence

After talking in my class for a while I realized I love to teach.  I want to teach.  I think tutorials and resources should be free trade between teacher and artist.

I’ve been away for so long and I’m sure most of you have wandered off to other sites for your photoshopping needs, but I tell you this, I will come back with some new tutorials, tips, and tricks.

Bungie, HaloScreenshots.com, and the Man…

May 30, 2009 halcylon 6 comments

While it seems like a great idea on paper, something just seems off about this whole deal. I know that my opinion doesn’t hold much weight in the world, but being a screenshot artist, digital artist, and… well… artist I wanted to weigh in regardless.

Deconstruction – Eve

April 15, 2009 halcylon 2 comments

Ever since I saw a few cyborg images, I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it.  Recently, I finished my first of these images in the form of Eve.  Originally named “EV.3″ this image became a project that I never “properly” finished.  I always wanted to go back and redo a few things here and there but after a week’s time fraking with it, I decided I wanted to just post it and get some good critiques.  Some were helpful!  Most were appreciative.  I was stunned.  More importantly, people wanted to know how it was done.  So here is my deconstruction and tutorial of Eve… Read more…

Seamless Backgrounds

Tiling web backgrounds can be made from any image. The smaller the image, the more it tiles. Few people however, actually go the extra step to make sure their tile repeats seamlessly. A seamless tile will always look better than a non-seamless tile, so let us begin. I’ll be going over a couple of different ways to check if your tile repeats seamlessly.

Short Cuts Rule. It’s True.

Not many people would argue how time consuming using only your mouse can be while working in Photoshop. It just is. Knowing keyboard short cuts drastically increases productivity. However, trying to learn all the Photoshop short cuts at once can be burdensome. The best thing to do is pick 3 to 4 short cuts and practice using them for a full week. You’ll want to start with short cuts for tools you use the most or else you’ll be likely to forget them.

Not everyone notices right away but a lot of short cuts can be found just by hovering through the menus.  Many are standard for both Mac and PC, while others vary slightly. Let’s take a quick peek under the File menu.

Tell ‘em who you are!

March 23, 2009 halcylon 2 comments

For as long as I’ve been doing graphics, there is one thing that everyone asks for at one point in time, “Can you make me a signature for my forum?”  I rarely ever turn down the opportunity to do some work for fun, so most of the time I am happy to oblige. There are some times, however, when I just can’t get enough time to make some and have to recommend that they make their own.

What I’ve done for you today, because I’m so awesome, is create a Halo 3 themed signature and uploaded the PSD to Mediafire.com. You can download the file and make changes as you see fit and follow along with my instructions if you like!

Tiffen F/X

March 22, 2009 halcylon 3 comments

So I was noodling around on the App Store for my new iPwn – I refuse to admit that I like the damn thing – and I stumbled upon a familiar name.  I was looking for something for photo editing and I found an app called Photo F/X by Tiffen.

Now for anyone who may hear that name and think, “Huh, that’s familiar…” that’s because it is.  Tiffen is the company that’s responsible for the – in this author’s humble opinion – best photoshop plug in to date Tiffen Dfx 2.

So what’s so great? Editing photos on the fly with the best software available is what’s so great!! I’ve tinkered with this for a few days now and its just so much fun! Blurring, colorizing, vignette… all able to be done on this app with any image on your phone!

Here are some screen caps from the site…

Right now the app is running at $2.99, but I would totally recommend it for you all! Easily the best find I’ve… found. Man I need a thesaurus.

Deconstruction – Moon Dog

So you’ve probably seen this image if you’ve been around for the past few months and are a friend of mine. I’ve whored this image out to anyone who would take it and host it, not to mention made it me featured DeviantArt piece.  While I don’t have time to break this down and tutorialize this right now, what I will do is break it down easily so you can understand the process.
